Cathleen McDonough  graduated in 1978 from the College of the Holy Cross and then the Seton Hall University School of Law.  Following a clerkship with the Honorable David D. Furman of the New Jersey Superior Court Appellate Division, she was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1984.   She was next associated with the law firm of Archer & Greiner and then went to Bourne, Noll & Kenyon of Summit, New Jersey.  In 1987, Ms. McDonough joined Nagel, Rice, Dreifuss & Mazie and remained there as a partner until 1998 when she joined Gary Newman as a partner in the firm that became Newman, McDonough, Schofel & Giger, P.C.

Ms. McDonough has been practicing in the field of family law for approximately twenty-five years.  During this time she has developed a reputation for vigorous advocacy and a clarity of thinking that clients prize when attempting to address challenging issues, including complex financial matters.  Her scope of practice includes extensive experience in mediation, arbitration and judicial litigation.  As a result of her reputation for competence and fairness, she has received appointments to serve as a guardian ad litem in Essex county.

Cathleen has also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Family Law Section of the New Jersey Bar Association and twice served as a panelist on, and was also the chair of, the Essex County Fee Arbitration Committee.  She continues to participate on early settlement panels in Essex, Union and Morris counties including service on blue ribbon settlement panels in those jurisdictions.

Ms. McDonough has also been seen as an expert on the Today Show and was a guest commentator on TruTV/In-Session for a series of appearances.   The Institute of Continuing Education has asked her to lecture and serve as a panelist in programs it has sponsored.

Among her honors, are designation as one of the 50 top women attorneys in New Jersey as published in New Jersey Monthly Magazine for 2006, as well as inclusion by Super Lawyers for each of the past 11 years.
